Kitirena: /* Analysis: Anomaly */

Survival is an alternate gamemode that challenges players to survive, explore, and evacuate civilians from a galaxy threatened by an expanding Anomaly. It features a dynamic story, unique contracts known as Special Missions, escalating difficulty, and a growing sense of urgency. Survival can be accessed from the main menu and operates separately from the campaign.

Objective
The ultimate goal in Survival is to rescue and evacuate as many civilians as possible through a functioning Stargate, before it too is destroyed by the anomaly.

Getting Started
Before starting a Survival run, the player selects a starting ship from the library. Ships may cost up to $1.5M and must contain at least one Docking Port and one Cabin.

Alternatively, players can choose the Build New Ship option and begin at a Shipyard with $1.5M in budget to construct their own vessel.

All starting configurations receive a "starter kit" with essential components and supplies not already included in the chosen hull — such as Reactors, FTL Drives, Airducts, Engines, Loaders, Crew, and consumables.

A short, guided tutorial introduces the player to basic ship operations and initiates the first FTL Jump.

New Sector and Special Missions
After the first jump, three Special Missions become available. These narrative-driven contracts resemble Story Contracts and persist throughout the playthrough.

Analysis: Anomaly
The Institute tasks the player with collecting scientific data on the moving anomaly. Upon accepting this mission, the player receives two Hyperspace Sensors to install.

* Data is gathered automatically during FTL jumps.
* Jumps closer to the anomaly yield more data.
* The Institute contacts the player with goals and rewards:
** 10 data → $10,000
** 100 data → $100,000
** 1,000 data → $1,000,000
** 10,000 data → $10,000,000

Further thresholds may exist but are currently unknown.

Evacuation
The player must help evacuate civilians from endangered systems before they are lost to the anomaly.

* Each completed Urgent passenger transport request counts toward mission progress.
** 10 passengers → $10,000
** 100 passengers → $200,000
** 1,000 passengers → $2,000,000

Evacuation totals are cumulative and do not require passengers to remain on board.

Further thresholds may exist but are currently unknown.

Nomad
This mission challenges the player to develop a self-sufficient mobile fleet capable of long-term survival.

* Rewards are based on the fleet’s concurrent total population (including crew, civilians, and temporary passengers):
** 10 population → $10,000
** 100 population → $100,000
** 1,000 population → $1,000,000

To succeed, players must expand life support systems, housing, and infrastructure.

Further thresholds may exist but are currently unknown.

Civilians and Fleet Expansion
Civilians may be collected from any Colony or Shipyard in exchange for payment and will remain aboard as long-term residents. The number of available civilians — and their offered payment — increases as the anomaly expands. The total number of civilians rescued will eventually count as the player's final score.

Jump Gates and Sector Progression
The final Star System in each sector contains a Jump Gate, usually located in the system farthest from the start. This gate provides access to the next sector.

* The gate may be damaged, demand a fee, or be under pirate control.
* To use it, move your fleet into range and activate it via the FTL tab.
* The jump screen displays the number of civilians in your fleet — this will become your final score.

Contracts
Alongside Special Missions, players can accept the usual Procedural Contracts as well as a sector-wide Hostile clearance mission and a protect mission.

Sector-wide Hostile Clearance
A sector may also include a mission to destroy all hostile ships:

* Defeating all enemies in the sector grants a large cash bonus.
* Destroyed hostiles do not respawn.
* These missions are dangerous but highly profitable.

Protect Mission
Up to once per sector, a Distress Call may appear. A civilian ship is under pirate attack and must be rescued quickly.

* If the player succeeds, they must choose between:
** A monetary reward
** Adding the rescued ship to their Fleet

These encounters offer both risk and permanent fleet expansion.

Anomaly Proximity Effects
The anomaly affects trade and availability of goods:

* High-tech items become significantly discounted.
* Basic consumables (Food, Water, Fuel, Oxygen, FTL Charges, Ammo) become more expensive.
* Near the anomaly’s edge, critical resources may disappear entirely from markets.

Smart timing and stockpiling are essential for survival.

Resource Scarcity and Recycling
Beyond sector 5, trade stations stop offering vital supplies. From this point on, survival depends on internal fleet production:

* Produce all consumables on board
* Harvest and refine Ore, Gas, and Ice
* Rely on Recycling systems for sustainability

All recycling starts at 66% efficiency and can be upgraded to 100% via Research. Hydroponics, Water Purifiers, and fuel production through Metreon Gas are also more efficient in Survival Mode.

Ships that are capable of sustaining themselves with little or no external trade will thrive. Those that aren’t will quickly fail.

Logistics Drones
Logistics Drones are vital for autonomous operations:

* Mining, salvaging, and gas collection
* Cargo transport, repair, and logistics
* Scaling up large, modular ships

Players should acquire and maintain a fleet of drones early and invest in enough Drone Bays and spares.

Notes
* The Stargate Project storyline and associated Research are disabled in Survival.
* Ice Comets are more common and yield 5× more water ice per shot.
* Hostile systems are permanently cleared — enemies do not respawn.
* Hydroponic Gardens can now be manufactured via Assembly Table with proper research.

The Stargate Project is the aim of the Boldly Go gamemode. It is completed in 10 phases which all require different quantities of items or other requirements.

These items are usually Stargate Components though occasionally other items are required such as Tilium Crystals and Stable Isotopes.

The construction of the Stargate is loacted in the central Star System of the starting Sector. The final goal is to have a fully operational Stargate.
Phases
Phase 1: Certification
* This phase is completed during the Deep Space Industrialists contract, where the player partners with Alexander James Elistar.
* Manufacture and deliver 10 Stargate Frames for certification.
* This phase concludes the Deep Space Industrialists contract.
* Manufacture and deliver 200 Stargate Frames.
* Upon delivery, the player must choose between honoring the 50/50 profit split with Elistar or canceling the partnership, which results in the immediate loss of the A.J.E. Foundry station.

Phase 3: Advanced Components
* Deliver 250 Stargate Actuator, 250 Stargate Resin, and 100 Stable Isotopes.

Phase 4: Crystal Refinement
* Deliver 200 Stargate Receiver, 150 Stargate Capacitor, and 250 Tilium Crystals.

Black Hole Sun is a multi-part Story Contract arc that explores themes of ambition, risk, and scientific ethics through the story of Dr. Julian Martinez, his brother Marcus Martinez, and their work with the enigmatic Stargate Project LLC. The arc leads directly into the events of The Trouble with Tiddlets and introduces key characters, technologies, and dilemmas that shape the storyline.

Overview
The storyline unfolds across several parts, with each contract escalating the stakes and complexity. Player decisions — especially in the final mission — directly affect relationships, story outcomes, and future rewards. Notably, the arc introduces the Hop Drive, a key technology in the follow-up The Trouble with Tiddlets storyline.

Part 1
Upon entering the system, the player is greeted by Dr. Julian Martinez, who introduces himself and requests urgent assistance. He and his brother Marcus have been studying the local black hole — officially designated QZ247 — for many years. QZ247 is described as the collapsed remnant of a once-massive star.

Dr. Martinez explains that the Stargate Project has been funding their research from the beginning, in exchange for scientific data gathered from the black hole. The closer they get to the event horizon, the more valuable the collected data becomes.

However, their most recent experiment went too far. Marcus piloted the sensor ship closer to the black hole than anyone has before. All contact was lost, and although telemetry suggests the ship is still intact, Marcus has not responded for a long time. The player is tasked with rescuing him.

To approach safely, a modified FTL Drive is required — one capable of performing a precision hyperspace hop without being pulled into the black hole. Dr. Martinez offers to perform the necessary modifications, but requests materials first:

* 1,200 Hyperspace Isotopes

A short tutorial is provided, explaining how to gather Hyperspace Isotopes using the Hyperspace Scoop and a corresponding Loader. The player must install these components and perform FTL Jumps to collect isotopes. It is recommended to include a storage Tank, as the scoop gathers faster than the loader can transfer.

Once the required 1,200 Hyperspace Isotopes have been delivered back to Dr. Martinez, the part concludes. The player receives a reward of $200,000. Dr. Martinez promises to contact the player again when the next phase is ready.

Part 2
Some time after completing the first part, Dr. Julian Martinez contacts the player again to announce that the modified FTL drive is ready. The player is asked to return to his system to begin the next phase.

Upon arrival, Dr. Martinez explains the plan. The new FTL drive allows for extremely short-distance jumps — just enough to dip into the black hole’s vicinity and extract Marcus. Two jumps will be required: one inward, and one outward.

Before proceeding, Dr. Martinez needs assistance crafting a special type of FTL Charge. When the contract is accepted, he explains the requirement:

* 60 Tilium Crystals

A short explanation follows on how to acquire these crystals. The player can either mine Tilium Ore and refine it into crystals, or simply purchase the crystals outright.

If the player already has 60 or more Tilium Crystals on board at the moment of accepting the mission, the contract completes immediately — even if the crystals are located on another ship in a different system. However, if there are fewer than 60 crystals available locally, the mission will not proceed until the required amount is present in the system.

Once 60 Tilium Crystals have been delivered, Part 2 is completed and the player receives a reward of $300,000.

Part 3
Black Hole Sun, Part 3
* Dr. Martinez unveils the Hop Drive, a prototype FTL technology.
* The player helps complete the project and decides how much data to recover — full, partial, or abandon rescue efforts.
* This decision has long-term narrative impact and determines the player’s standing with Dr. Martinez and his brother.
* The result influences rewards and unlocks the continuation of the story in The Trouble with Tiddlets, Part 3.

Legacy
The final choice in Part 3 has lasting consequences, influencing pricing, dialogue, and moral tone in the The Trouble with Tiddlets series. The state of the Hop Drive, and the fate of Marcus Martinez, are directly referenced in follow-up contracts.

* 1,200 Hyperspace Isotopes

* 60 Tilium Crystals

The Trouble with Tiddlets is a multi-part Story Contract arc centered around the mysterious Tiddlets — small, strange creatures of unknown origin. The storyline unfolds gradually across several contracts and features elements of exploration, science, diplomacy, and ultimately, survival.

The quest begins harmlessly, with simple investigation and scientific curiosity. However, later parts reveal increasingly troubling discoveries that raise ethical, logistical, and existential concerns.

Overview
The storyline is divided into several parts, each with its own objectives, rewards, and implications. Later parts depend on decisions made in earlier missions, and player choices can affect outcomes, resources, or relationships with other factions.

Part 1: Discovery
* Initial discovery of unidentified lifeforms (later named Tiddlets).
* Basic collection and observation tasks.
* No risk or urgency; purely exploratory.

Part 2: Research and Testing
* Delivery and observation of Tiddlet samples.
* Confirmation that Hyperspace Shock is fatal to Tiddlets.
* Early hints at the creatures’ reproductive behavior.
* Still low-risk and primarily scientific.

Part 3: Hop Drive Experiments
The Trouble with Tiddlets, Part 3
* The player acquires a Short Hopper ship with a modified FTL Drive.
* Repetitive "hop" jumps are used to trigger Tiddlet reproduction.
* Player must decide between supporting Dr. Magnus Swanson or helping Prof. Artemis Toppingbury liberate the Tiddlets.
* Decision affects rewards, tone, and future dialogue.

Part 4: Farm Ship Disaster
The Trouble with Tiddlets, Part 4
* The Tiddlet farm ship suffers catastrophic failure and uncontrollable FTL jumps.
* The player must rescue six stranded scientists before the ship explodes.
* Two Tiddlets remain aboard the player’s ship.
* Depending on earlier choices, the player receives a reward or a warning from Toppingbury.

Legacy
Depending on player choices during the storyline, consequences may persist beyond the final part — affecting future Contracts, Faction relations, or the game world itself.

Decisions made during this contract are believed to affect later stages of the Stargate Project, especially Stargate Project, Phase 8.
A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, Part 2 is a story contract that follows the investigation started in A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, Part 1. It becomes available shortly after completing the first part of the contract, when Commander Harken hails the player again.

Story
The contract initiates when the player travels back to the CMDR HARKEN system. Commander Harken reveals that attempts to track the pirate vessel have failed, as they consistently arrive to find only destroyed ships with no trace of the perpetrators.

During this briefing, the player is interrupted by an emergency hail from Captain Amelia Ryker of the vessel UMC Orion Sentinel:

:"This is Captain Amelia Ryker of the UMC vessel Orion Sentinel. We are under attack! They appeared out of nowhere and fired on us without warning, and won't respond to any of my communications. I'm trying to hold them off, but I need help. My engines are damaged. Ships systems have failed. Please hurry, I have 40 crew onboard!"

Commander Harken immediately defines the situation as an urgent humanitarian rescue operation.

Phase 1: Briefing and Preparation
Commander Harken stresses that time is running out and urges the player to proceed to the ORION SENTINEL system immediately.

To dock with the UMC Orion Sentinel and rescue the crew, the player must first acquire and install Thrusters. Since the CMDR HARKEN system does not possess a Shipyard or Colony, the player must travel to an appropriate system to purchase the required equipment before heading to the ORION SENTINEL system.

Preparation Objective:
* Fit four Thrusters to your vessel

Mission Objective (Overall):
* Rescue the 40 crew of the UMC Orion Sentinel

Notes on Thrusters
Thrusters are essential for successful docking in rescue scenarios. If the player does not already possess them, they must be purchased at a Shipyard or Colony located in another system. The objective prompt shows the current installation progress (e.g., [2/4]).

Phase 2: Engagement, Retreat, and Rescue
Upon arrival in the ORION SENTINEL system, the player finds the UMC Orion Sentinel actively under attack. The attacking ship is immediately recognizable, as its silhouette strongly resembles the blurred sensor images of the pirate vessel Commander Harken revealed at the end of Part 1.

The mission begins with a brief tutorial on activating and utilizing the ship's Weapon Systems. Shortly after the tutorial concludes, Captain Ryker sends an urgent distress call.

As the player approaches the engagement zone and their weapon systems are ready, the enemy vessel breaks off its attack and immediately retreats.

The player then begins a short tutorial explaining the basics of Docking with an external vessel. During this time, Captain Ryker warns that her ship is severely damaged and close to destruction.

After a successful dock, the player begins transferring the 40 crew members. During this process, Captain Ryker sends a final transmission: she states that the reactor is close to overheating and that she will buy the player a few seconds to ensure the entire crew can be saved.

* Captain Amelia Ryker remains on the ship to ensure the crew's rescue.
* Immediately after the player's vessel undocks, the UMC Orion Sentinel explodes.

Following the destruction of the UMC Orion Sentinel, the ship leaves behind a field of debris that can be salvaged by the player. Collection requires the use of Logistics Drones.

Recommendation: Since the player now has 40 crew members aboard, they must ensure they have sufficient Life support before beginning salvage operations.

Conclusion
After rescuing the 40 crew members, the player must take them to any available Shipyard or Colony to safely drop them off. Upon transfer, it is noted that Captain Amelia Ryker is missing, confirming her sacrifice for the crew's rescue.

The player then returns to the CMDR HARKEN system to formally complete the mission. Commander Harken contacts the player, regrets the loss of Captain Ryker, officially closes the contract, and advises the player to be cautious before promising the next briefing.

* Completion Requirements: Rescue all 40 crew members, drop them off at a Shipyard or Colony, and report back to CMDR HARKEN.
* Reward: The player receives a reward of $250,000 credits.

This conclusion immediately leads to the next main story contract, A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, Part 3.

A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing is a multi-part Story Contract arc focused on locating and neutralizing the elusive pirate vessel responsible for numerous attacks on UMC infrastructure. The storyline revolves around a strategic counter-operation planned by Commander Harken to lure the powerful pirate into a controlled trap.

Overview
The storyline is divided into three distinct parts. The series introduces advanced ship operations, including crew logistics, specialized equipment handling (thrusters), and new combat mechanics (the EMP trap).

Part 1: Initial Investigation
A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, Part 1
* The player is tasked with recovering the Flight Recorders from three separate destroyed commercial vessels, including the UMC Interstellar Prospector, the UMC Infinite Horizon, and the UMC Celestial Hauler.
* The mission introduces environmental hazards (Meteor Shower in INFINITE HORIZON) and player choices (paying a scavenger for the Flight Recorder, or fighting them).
* A final piece of evidence (the wreckage of the UMC Stellar Horizon) must be collected via shuttle operation.
* Reward: $200,000 Credits.

Part 2: Rescue and Tracking
A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, Part 2
* The mission begins with an urgent humanitarian rescue operation to save the 40 crew members of the UMC Orion Sentinel, which is actively under attack by the target pirate vessel.
* The player must install **four Thrusters** to successfully dock with the distressed ship.
* The mission features the sacrifice of Captain Amelia Ryker, who ensures the crew's escape before the UMC Orion Sentinel explodes.
* Reward: $250,000 Credits.

Part 3: The Decoy Operation
A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, Part 3
* The player must crew and pilot the decoy freighter UMC Astral Temptress into remote systems to lure the pirates.
* The core of the operation involves executing a critical sequence: installing weapons onto the UMC Astral Temptress, charging and detonating a massive EMP burst to trap the enemy.
* The player must survive a two-minute holdout against the disabled pirate ship until Harken's strike force arrives for the annihilation and salvage operation.
* Reward: $300,000 Credits and ownership of the UMC Astral Temptress.

Legacy
The successful completion of this contract arc secures the safety of the UMC's supply lines in the sector and provides the player with a valuable new freighter, the UMC Astral Temptress, suitable for immediate commercial use or refitting.

Kitirena: /* Phase 2: Follow-up Investigations */

A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, Part 1 is a story contract initiating the investigation into a series of commercial vessel disappearances. This contract becomes available shortly after completing the tutorial phase, when Commander Harken hails the player to introduce the mission.

Story
Commander Harken, the Chief of Private Security for the sector, contacts the player to investigate foul play regarding missing commercial vessels. The mission involves a multi-stage evidence retrieval operation, culminating in the analysis of the collected data.

Phase 1: Initial Investigation (UMC Interstellar Prospector)
The initial task requires the player to travel to the INTERSTELLAR PROSPECTOR system to locate the reported shipwreck of the UMC Interstellar Prospector and recover its Flight Recorder (Black Box).

The collection requires installing a Drone Bay and at least one Logistics Drone, both of which must be purchased from a Shipyard or Colony if not already owned.

Completion Requirements: Recover the Flight Recorder using a Logistics Drone, and deliver it to Commander Harken aboard the Vanguard in the CMDR HARKEN system.

The wreck site yields salvageable debris and cargo:

* 122 × Bullets
* 1 × Cannon Shells
* 2 × Frame
* 1 × Copper Ingot
* 2 × Motor
* 49 × Explosives
* 2 × Metal Ingot
* 1 × Lens
* 1 × Railgun Slugs
* 120 × Scrap Metal
* 1 × Gas Collector
* 1 × Chair

Phase 2: Follow-up Investigations
After the initial Flight Recorder is delivered, Commander Harken assigns follow-up investigation objectives across three separate systems to gather more evidence.

The follow-up objectives are:
* Recover the Flight Recorder from UMC Infinite Horizon in the INFINITE HORIZON system.
* Recover the Flight Recorder from UMC Celestial Hauler in the CELESTIAL HAULER system.
* Collect the wreckage of the UMC Stellar Horizon from the NG5 system.

The final contract completion requires returning all three pieces of evidence to Commander Harken at the CMDR HARKEN system.

The subsequent investigations present distinct challenges:

* UMC Infinite Horizon: The INFINITE HORIZON system features an intense Meteor Shower. The wreck contains a significant amount of Scrap Metal for salvage, but due to the high risk of hull damage from meteorite strikes, players must weigh the resource benefit against repair costs. Players are advised to equip armour and Gatling Guns. Retrieval requires a Logistics Drone.
* UMC Celestial Hauler: This wreck contains salvageable Scrap Metal. Upon arrival in the CELESTIAL HAULER system, the player is confronted by a Scavenger Wraith which possesses the Flight Recorder. The Scavenger Wraith demands $20,000 credits for the device. The player may either pay the $20,000 ransom or destroy the Scavenger Wraith to obtain the Flight Recorder. Destruction has no known negative faction consequences and yields additional Scrap Metal.
* UMC Stellar Horizon Wreckage: Located in NG5, the collection requires a Shuttle operation (not Logistics Drones) and the debris consists of 80 units of wreckage, requiring sufficient Storage capacity.

Conclusion
The A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, Part 1 contract is fully completed upon returning all collected evidence to the CMDR HARKEN system. Upon final delivery, the Vanguard docks again, and the items are transferred.

The player receives a reward of $200,000 credits.

Following the analysis, Commander Harken informs the player that the evidence points to a highly organized pirate vessel which must be tracked down and destroyed. She reveals a new sensor image of the attacker, confirms that they must be tracked down and destroyed, and advises the player to use the received funds to repair the ship hull at any Shipyard and upgrade defenses in preparation for the next mission.

The subsequent investigation to track down the pirate vessel forms the basis of the next main story contract, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, Part 2, which is initiated when Commander Harken calls the player again shortly after.
The Energy Transmitter is used for test fire phases of the Stargate Project. Each Energy Transmitter beams 200 MW maximum therefore multiple of these are required to complete a phase.

They are expensive to make, requiring 10 Frames, 10 Energy Coils, 4 Motors and 4 Lens. They cannot be bought from the trade screen.

Energy Transmitters need a large space in front of them, with an additional 8 x 4 squares in front of them needing to be unoccupied with other space objects or the ship.
Boldly Go is the main gamemode of The Last Starship. It features a structured narrative introduction, a guided tutorial, and open-ended gameplay that evolves dynamically based on player choices. Accessed from the main menu, this mode serves as the game’s default campaign experience and provides the core storyline through multiple phases.

Introduction
Set in the 23rd century, Boldly Go begins with humanity having expanded beyond the Solar System, colonizing distant star systems across the galaxy. Powerful corporations and factions compete fiercely to claim resources and influence in uncharted space, where new threats and opportunities constantly arise.

The player takes on the role of a commander hired by the CEO of the Interstellar Mining Corporation, tasked with an ambitious goal: to construct a Stargate capable of enabling faster-than-light travel to the nearest galaxy. Backed by trillions in funding, the player must manage shipbuilding, exploration, resource gathering, crew survival, and interstellar diplomacy to succeed.

The opening sequence is presented via cinematic text, providing lore and setting the tone for the campaign’s epic scope.

Starting Setup
The player begins aboard the Procyon Cruiser, a versatile early-game vessel designed for exploration and initial resource gathering. The ship is partially outfitted and provisioned with the following:

* 5 Basic Crew members
* 5 Spacesuits for EVA and survival aboard an unpressurized ship
* 59 Cabins for accommodating crew and Passengers
* 5,000 Fuel units
* 300 Food units
* 3,000 Water units
* 4,000 Oxygen units
* $300,000 in starting funds

Essential systems are pre-installed:

* 2 Engine modules
* 1 Ladder for Habitation Deck access
* Several Doors
* 1 Docking Port

In addition, several important components are available in inventory and must be installed during the tutorial:

* 1 Small Tank and 1 Medium Tank
* 1 Reactor
* 1 Fuel Loader and 1 Oxygen Loader
* 1 Air Duct for enriching the Atmosphere with oxygen

Tutorial
The guided tutorial introduces the core systems and interface of The Last Starship. It covers:

* Camera movement and UI fundamentals
* Installing loaders, tanks, and ducts to complete life support
* Connecting the Powergrid and activating the reactor
* Navigating the ship using the Tactical Screen
* Purchasing an FTL Drive and FTL Charge via the Trade screen
* Installing and charging the FTL system
* Using the Sector Map to plan interstellar travel
* Performing the first FTL Jump
* Accepting and completing a procedural contract, typically an urgent passenger transport request

Upon successful delivery, the player receives rewards and completes the first full gameplay cycle.

The tutorial then introduces the Sector Map’s special systems, marked by a golden diamond and three red question marks (???). These systems contain unique missions (see below), and players are told they may find anything there.

Once this is explained, the tutorial ends.

Introduction to Special Missions
Shortly after the tutorial concludes, the player is contacted by Commander Harken. She introduces herself as chief of security for the sector and explains that many people are in need of help. Her resources are stretched thin, and she asks the player to assist where possible, offering advice and guidance when needed.

This marks the beginning of the game's Special Mission arcs. These appear as golden-highlighted systems on the Sector Map and offer narrative-driven scenarios, moral decisions, and unique rewards. Each arc begins at a named system. The first three are:

* Black Hole Sun
* The Trouble with Tiddlets
* A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

The story will not progress until the player travels to one of these locations. Until then, gameplay remains open-ended.

Docking Tutorial
When the player enters a system where civilians must be rescued from a disabled ship, a docking mini-tutorial is triggered. This tutorial covers the following steps:

* Locate the target vessel and its docking port
* Align the player ship’s port using the tactical screen
* Approach slowly and initiate docking
* Wait for clamps to engage and connection to be confirmed

Once docked, Civilians will board the player’s ship. This mechanic is essential for many missions throughout the campaign.

Docking is also used for Logistics tasks, enabling transfer of people, resources, and equipment between ships. Mastery of docking is vital for fleet support operations.

Combat Tutorial
The first time the player enters a Star System containing Hostile ships, the game pauses automatically and launches the combat tutorial.

This tutorial introduces the basic mechanics of ship combat, including:

* Switching to the Tactical Screen
* Activating Battlestations to prepare the crew
* Targeting enemy ships and ordering weapons to fire
* Unpausing the game to begin real-time engagement

Once completed, future hostile encounters proceed without further interruption.

Andromeda Project Research
As the story progresses, the player gains access to unique, multi-stage research options exclusive to Boldly Go. The first three stages are visible immediately in the Research screen, with further stages becoming available as the player advances through the storyline. These research entries and project stages are not available in sandbox or other game modes.

In general, to generate Research Points (RP), a Scientist must operate a Science Station. To generate Computation Points (CP), a powered Supercomputer is required.

The first research item, Andromeda Project Part 1, requires 1 RP. It unlocks the Stargate Frame blueprint and enables Phases 1 and 2 of the Andromeda Project. It also unlocks access to Andromeda Project Part 2 and permanently enables the Stargate tab in the interface, which tracks construction progress and requirements.

The second stage, Andromeda Project Part 2, requires 2 RP and 1 CP. It unlocks the Stargate Actuator and Stargate Resin blueprints, and enables Phase 3 of the project. Completion of Part 1 is required to unlock this research.

The third stage, Andromeda Project Part 3, requires 4 RP and 3 CP. It unlocks the Energy Transmitter, Stargate Receiver, and Stargate Capacitor blueprints, and enables Phases 4 and 5 of the project. Additionally, the Neubidium Processing and Zeleon Gas research entries become visible in the research screen. Completion of Part 2 is required before this research becomes available.

Both Neubidium Processing and Zeleon Gas can be researched immediately once visible, regardless of whether the player has discovered any Neubidium Ore or Zeleon Gas. However, unless the relevant resource has been found, their subsequent research entries will not appear. These two research items are independent of one another and can be completed in parallel. As noted above, completion of Andromeda Project Part 3 is required before either becomes available.

* Neubidium Processing requires 1 RP and 2 CP. It unlocks Neubidium Ore Smelting.
* Zeleon Gas requires 1 RP and 2 CP. It unlocks Zeleon Gas Collection and Zeleon Gas Refining.

Once both Neubidium Processing and Zeleon Gas have been researched, Andromeda Project Phase 6 as well as their respective follow-up research entries become available:

* Neubidium Fabrication requires 2 RP and 3 CP. It unlocks the Neubidium Capacitor and Energy Cell blueprints. It builds upon Neubidium Processing.
* Zeleon Energy Containment requires 2 RP and 3 CP. It unlocks the Shielded Canister, Shielded Zeleon, and Zeleon Energy Cell blueprints. It builds upon Zeleon Gas.

Once both Neubidium Fabrication and Zeleon Energy Containment have been researched, Andromeda Project Phase 7 becomes available.

Gameplay Progression
After completing the tutorial, the player can explore, upgrade the ship, hire crew, and complete procedural and story-driven contracts. Core gameplay includes:

* Mining Raw Materials from Asteroids and Comets
* Scavenging Salvage from Derelict Ships
* Research to unlock advanced technologies
* Construction for customizing ship layout
* Fleet operations with multiple vessels
* Combat with hostile ships
* Narrative and faction-based decision-making

The overarching story progresses through linked contracts and culminates in the Stargate Project. This goal is not visible at the start and only becomes available once specific research and missions are completed.

Tips and Strategies
* Prioritize life support and power infrastructure early
* Use Recycling and Hydroponics to reduce supply dependency
* Take procedural contracts to build reputation and earn credits
* The hostile systems in Boldly Go are spawning waves of hostile ships that never stop
