A Sector Scan is a gameplay mechanic introduced in Alpha 17 of The Last Starship. It allows the player to survey unexplored areas of a Sector, revealing nearby Star Systems and points of interest (POIs).

Overview

Sector Scans are the first step in discovering new locations. The process requires dedicated hyperspace sensor equipment and some time to complete. Once the scan finishes, additional star systems or POIs become visible around the player's current location on the Sector Map.

Detailed information about the discovered systems is obtained through a Local Survey. This process can be triggered on the sector map by clicking the POI and is subsequently performed automatically as long as the player has a powered Supercomputer onboard and remains in the same sector where the system was discovered. No scientists or crew assignments are required. After the local survey, the POI can be jumped to via FTL just like any other star system.

Some of these newly discovered systems may contain Derelict Ships. These often include unique loot items that can be recovered and analyzed at a Science Station for research purposes.

Required Equipment

To perform a Sector Scan, the ship must be equipped with one of the following:

The standard sensors cover a smaller radius, while the long-range variant provides a much larger survey area. Both must be powered to function.

How to Perform a Scan

  1. Ensure the ship has either Hyperspace Sensors or Hyperspace Sensors LR installed and powered.
  2. While located in a star system, click the Sector Scan button.
  3. The scan will take some time to complete. Multiple sensors likely accelerate the process. The progress can be viewed on the sector map.
  4. When the scan is finished, new systems or POIs will be revealed on the sector map.
  5. To analyze these newly discovered systems, remain within the sector with a powered Supercomputer and click the POI on the sector map. A Local Survey will then be completed automatically.

Tutorial

The first introduction to Sector Scanning occurs at the beginning of Stargate Project, Phase 7, when Commander Harken hails the player. A short tutorial explains how to operate hyperspace sensors to unlock nearby systems.

Notes

  • Scans require time to complete and consume ship power while active.
  • Multiple sensors likely reduce the time required for scanning.
  • Introduced in Alpha 17.
